| SMRT Buses introduced its first new model in 8 years at an event held at NUS University Cultural Centre on 30 Apr 08. The Mercedes O500LE citybus is also South East Asia's FIRST Euro V compliant bus. 67 units are expected to be introduced by Oct 08, beginning with the first example on 14 May 08. They will replace the venerable Nissan Diesel U31RCN and the Scania L113CRL with ELBO bodywork as these 2 makes have drawn huge amount of complaints from the public over a variety of problems.
The O500LE is bodied by Gemilang of Malaysia and has a Citaro front, with Konvekta airconditioning and LAWO EDS. It is powered by a OM457hLA inline 6-cylinder 11.967-litre turbocharged intercooled, direct injection diesel that delivers a whooping 299bhp, making it the most powerful 12m single deck bus on the roads here currently. It is connected to a ZF automatic 6 gear gearbox. In order to meet the Euro V standards, another module uses an additive (known as AdBlue) to perform Selective Catalytic Reduction that breaks down Nitrogen Oxide in the exhaust to just Nitrogen and Oxygen. |
