20 Aug 2009 was a significant day for Singapore's public transport when the first Chinese built public bus was placed into service with SMRT Buses on service 854 from Yishun to Bedok. Registered as SMB135E, the Yutong ZK6126HGC has a 6 speed ZF automatic gearbox mated to a 9 litre Cummins ISLe engine and complies with Euro V emission standards.

 | 12th Apr 2006 | SMRT Buses - Scania L113CRL
Trans-Island introduced 50 Scania L113CRLs into their fleet in 1995, which was bodied with Walter Alexander Strider bodywork and featured underfloor airconditioners.
A further 15 examples was brought in the same year in 1996. These are the first buses in Trans-Island's fleet to feature zero-step boarding. These non-airconditioned examples are bodied by ELBO of Greece with Arianne bucket seats, both a first for the company. Following the company's transition to a fully air-conditioned fleet, they were later retrofitted with roof mounted Hispacold airconditioners in 2002.

These buses now both serve as training buses and on revenue service. Some of these buses have been operated by CSS and transferred over as CSS routes are being progressively withdrawn.

SMRT Buses introduced its first new model in 8 years at an event held at NUS University Cultural Centre on 30 Apr 08. The Mercedes O500LE citybus is also South East Asia's FIRST Euro V compliant bus. 67 units are expected to be introduced by Oct 08, beginning with the first example on 14 May 08. They will replace the venerable Nissan Diesel U31RCN and the Scania L113CRL with ELBO bodywork as these 2 makes have drawn huge amount of complaints from the public over a variety of problems.
The O500LE is bodied by Gemilang of Malaysia and has a Citaro front, with Konvekta airconditioning and LAWO EDS. It is powered by a OM457hLA inline 6-cylinder 11.967-litre turbocharged intercooled, direct injection diesel that delivers a whooping 299bhp, making it the most powerful 12m single deck bus on the roads here currently. It is connected to a ZF automatic 6 gear gearbox. In order to meet the Euro V standards, another module uses an additive (known as AdBlue) to perform Selective Catalytic Reduction that breaks down Nitrogen Oxide in the exhaust to just Nitrogen and Oxygen.

The backbone of Trans-Island's fleet, 235 units of them was first introduced to the fleet in 1994. These buses were bodied by Hispano Carrocera of Spain, and pioneered the use of individual seating units on public buses. These buses all had underfloor air-conditioning units, with the exception of TIB488J which had a supplementary Konvekta unit fitted on its roof in 2005.
A further 73 units were introduced in 1996, and these were non air-conditioned. 2 large, grilled vents near the roofline on either side of the bus allowed fresh air to be drawn into the interior. As these buses used the same aircondition ducts as the previous batch for ventilation purposes, it was hence easy to convert them to air-conditioned buses between 2000 and 2002.
15 additional units were fitted with the modified Volgren CR221L body in 1998, following successful implementation of the bodywork onto the Hino H3KRKA chassis earlier on.
All the Mercedes Benz 0405s of Trans-Island are fitted with ZF 4HP500 gearboxes.

The newest generation of Hino buses brought in by the then Trans-Island are bodied by Volgren. Volgren first produced a demonstrator body for TIBS, TIB905Y, before altering the design to fit TIBS's requirements. This body is used on all the other Hinos, and was modified to fit the MB0405 and Dennis Lance chassis as well later.

A total of 50 of these unique looking buses were procured by Trans-Island in 1996, and were bodied with the distinctive Sentanta bodywork by Walter Alexander of UK. They are fitted with Voith gearboxes, and are mainly deployed in the western region of Singapore.

Introduced mainly in 2003, these low floor DDs are the first in SBST DD fleet to be bodied by Volgren of Australia. They also have a re-styled interior, as well as semi-reclined seats by Volgel-sitze.

The workhorse of SBST's Double deck fleet. These buses are based on the Leyland Olympian chassis, which Volvo had taken over. There are mainly 3 batches of these DDs, namely the SBS9200-9400 with the blue seats, SBS9401-9599 with the red seats, and the SBS9600-9670 which is the final batch.

Touted as Singapore's First Wheelchair Accessible Bus, the first of the 150 buses were put into service on 27 Jun 06 on route 21 (St Michael's to Pasir Ris). All 150 units will be bodied by ComfortDelgro's own design, and features a manually operated ramp at the rear door to facilitate the movement of wheelchair bound passengers.
In addition, 100 of them will be the first public buses to be fitted with the ZF 6HP500 in Singapore, whilst the remainder would be mated with a 4 speed Voith gearbox.

A tribute to the hardworking and reliable MkIIs which have served for almost 18 years. These Volvo B10M MkIIs were very advanced for their time, featuring electronic bus management systems and a novel mid-engine chassis, over the conventional front or rear mounted engines. They were bodied in equal numbers with Duple Metsec and Walter Alexander bodyworks. Some of these buses are also fitted with air-conditioning in later years to provide additional passenger comfort.

The newest in Volvo's mid-engine lineout, there are 4 main variants of these buses in SBST fleet. There is the Duple Metsec body, the Alexander Strider body, the Duple Metsec DM3500 body and the Soon Chow body. These buses are fitted with either Voith or ZF automatic transmission.

Brought in to Singapore in 1993 in quantity, these buses were meant to replace to aging B57s. These buses have been refurbished recently to improve passenger comfort.

SBS Transit started to venture into low floor single deck citybuses through the purchase of SBS1688K, a diesel version of the Volvo B10BLE. Later, SBST further purchased 12 examples of the type, except that they are CNG(Compressed Natural Gas) powered for a cleaner environment.
SBS8030L was introduced as a Euro IV demonstrator in Jan 08 on service 174. It has a Volvo B7RLE chassis and is fitted with a distinctive Soon Chow bodywork.

A collection of Scanias in SBST fleet. There are currently 3 variants of Scanias, namely the Original Air-con (OAC), Converted Air-con (CAC) and the Non Air-con (NAC). These buses were introduced to Singapore in the late 1980s, and these Swedish buses were then touted as the quietest public buses on the roads.
This collection also includes SBS Transit's sole Scania L94UB demonstrator, SBS2888T which is fitted with Volgren body.

Singapore's first Euro IV public bus was introduced on 1 Nov 07 when 10 units of Scania K230UB were deployed on service 100 & 174. The Scania K230UB are bodied by Gemilang and fitted with 6 speed ZF gearboxes. The buses have CoolAir EDS as standard due to the difficulty faced in changing the conventional plastic destination signs as a result of the zero step entry.
In addition to 500 units of Euro IV compliant examples, a further order was placed for 400 units which comply with the more stringent Euro V emission standard. The first of these units were placed into service in April 2009, and feature a clearer and larger Hanover EDS, as well as an improved interior layout.

This collection showcases the different variants of Mercedes Benz buses currently in SBST fleet. They include the Original Air con (Walter Alexander and Duple Metsec bodies), and the Converted Air Con (Duple Metsec body). The only Mercedes Benz articulated bus in SBST fleet, SBS999U, is also featured.

SBS Transit placed its first new M.A.N Citybus in nearly 2 decades into service on 22 Jul 2008 on service 6. The M.A.N 18.240 HOCL-NL chassis is Euro IV compliant and is fitted with a Voith DIWA 854.5 as per the manufacturer's recommendations. It is bodied by Gemilang based on the original M.A.N Lion City bodywork. There is currently only 1 unit, SBS8031J, which is working as a demonstrator.

This bus was ex-SBS9245C, and was converted by Heartware Netwok in collaboration with Epson to become a mobile Epson gallery. This bus travels between different schools to teach students about creative expression and digital imaging. It has also recently been the star of an exchange programme to Malacca in Malaysia. The bus is entirely ran by MAD (Make A Difference) volunteers, and is sure a meaningful way to serve the community!

Formerly SBS7196Z, C/N ON10486, this Walter Alexander bodied Leyland Olympian 2-axle received a new lease of life as YL8508R after being scrapped by SBST, having fulfilled 17 years of faithful service to the company. She was then converted by a local company into a mobile playground that rotates around the different primary schools in Singapore. This concept of a mobile playground was first implemented in Australia. On 5 Dec 2004, she made a maiden public appearance at the Padang in conjunction with the Standard Chartered Marathon.

The historical district of Malacca is served by 10 local bus companies which connects Melaka Sentral, Malacca's new integrated transport terminal to the north, to various townships such as Alor Gajah and to the historical quarter.
In addition, Panaroma Melaka runs 2 routes catering to visitors on a "hop-on hop-off" basis. A Leyland Atlantean and MCW Metrobus are retrofitted with airconditioning and are deployed on the Red Line, while single deck MANs ply the extended Blue Line.

Rapid KL was formed in 2004 under the government's ambit to drastically improve the quality of public transport in and around Kuala Lumpur under the Valley Transport Plan. This calls for an amalgation of bus companies and routes, as well as ticketing system to rationalise resources and make the public transport network friendlier to use. The largest public bus company, Intrakota, was merged with Cityliner of Park May Bhd to form the bus division of Rapid KL, along with a livery change. Putra LRT and STAR LRT are also merged, along with a slight livery change and commonalisation of ticketing system.
In 2006-2007, the bus network was re-organised into a hub network consisting of Tempatan, Bandar, Utama & Ekspres routes. New buses, including wheelchair-accessible buses, were also brought into to replace the old fleet.

Triton began operations in Kuala Lumpur before diversifying its operations to Johor Bahru lately, with a fleet inherited from a now defunct bus operator, Naeila. It operates an interesting fleet of buses which includes Duple Metsec bodied Dennis Lances and Darts, as well as in-house bodied Hinos.
GML Line is a relatively new public bus operator that operate a number of long distance routes from its base at Larkin to destinations on the outskirts of Johor Bahru such as Senai Airport, Kulai and Kota Tinggi.

Maju Bas is one of the largest public bus operators in JB, and has recently undergone an extensive image makeover which includes a new corporate livery and refitting of their buses. In addition to the diverse network of intracity routes, Maju Bas also operates longer routes to destinations such as Senai Airport and Pontian. It also retains a two man operator system on most of their buses where a seperate conductor collects the bus fare.
